The 10th edition of the Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary, in keeping with previous editions,
uses an IPA-based phonemic system to indicate pronunciation. The system makes use of symbols
familiar to users of other ELT resources. The system is used to suggest British (Received
Pronunciation) and American (General American) pronunciations, and the intention is to
provide learners with—where possible—a single pronunciation for each word.
